Following an initial visit to Ethiopia by our member Richard King in 1987 a link was set up with the the Mekane Yesus Church (EECMY). Although the Exeter group is not church based, it has continued working through the EECMY Central Synod, based in Nekemte, as they have a good organisation and a well established Development Department.,
We are a Registered Charity (No. 1154085) and are administered by a Board of Trustees and Committee.
Exeter-Ethiopia Link’s key Ethiopian partner since its inception in 1987 has been the ‘Development & Social Service Commission’ (DASSC) of the Mekane Yesus Church (EECMY) – Central Synod. DASSC is a registered Ethiopia NGO engaged in development work which operates separately from the Mekane Yesus church organisation.
Our activities are funded by members' subscriptions, fundraising events, donations and grants from a range of awarding bodies.
Our community link is now mainly with Nekemte, a large town in the district of Wellega in western Ethiopia, about 220 miles west of the capital Addis Ababa.
We include the rural areas around Nekemte and a large village 60 miles away called Hareto where we began our link.
We aim to enable communities to develop their educational institutions with an emphasis on literacy, health and nutrition.
We aim to enable communities to improve their health by providing medical equipment, facilities and training.
We aim to support people with disabilities to develop their capacities and maximise their opportunities for self-reliance.
We aim to facilitate the improvement of water supply and to promote the sustainable use of natural resources.
