Access to libraries

This year, Exeter Ethiopia Link is supporting 46 primary schools with active libraries — up from 40 schools last year. Of these, 35 librarians are funded by the project, while 11 are supported by the government. To strengthen library services across all schools, training and mentoring are provided to both project‑funded and government‑supported librarians, ensuring consistent standards and professional growth for all.
Across the network, school libraries record an average of 32,000 monthly visits, with 2,639 books borrowed each month. The project has also distributed 1,379 reference books to 16 school libraries, expanding access to quality learning materials.

Librarian Training
Girls' Literacy

Exeter Ethiopia Link supported 10 schools (4 continuing, 6 new pilots) with weekly catch‑up tutorials for 293 Grade 2 girls, measuring progress through baseline and endline assessments. Results show illiteracy reduced from 39% to 19%, fluent readers increased from 13.5% to 38%, and nearly half (49%) reached minimum or fluent reading levels against a target of 80%, with a clear trend of girls advancing directly into confident reading. To strengthen delivery, teachers were first trained in learner‑centered tutorials, and schools were equipped with 450 mini‑blackboards, flash cards, teaching aids, 25 rags, chalk, and markers, ensuring classrooms are interactive and supportive of literacy gains.

Girls’ Cycling Project

The program began with a target of 12 girls from 2 secondary schools. It has now expanded to more than 39 girls attending regularly, far exceeding expectations.
Training is designed to help complete beginners become confident riders. Sessions are held twice a week, with 2‑hour classes in each school, led by a dedicated coach.
This initiative is giving girls new skills, confidence, and opportunities through cycling.
