What we do?

Carbon Offsetting and Development

Traditional cooking methods on an open '3 stone' fire use vast amounts of wood and leads to the destruction of some 200,000 hectares of Ethiopian forests a year. They produce high volumes of smoke that have a serious impact on health, particularly for women and children, and contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Exeter-Ethiopia Link has recently sponsored a pilot project in which 20 families have received fuel-efficient stoves. 4 Women have been trained in their production and will now be able to derive an income by making and selling more stoves. We also provide schools with money for tree planting and essential animal proof fencing.

Fuel efficient stoves use half the wood of traditional stoves and
• reduce CO2 emissions by 3 tonnes per household per year
• reduce deforestation
• reduce the time spent collecting wood and cooking
• reduce the harmful health effects of wood smoke in the home
• reduce poverty as costs of fuel are lowered
